The latest news about Ana!-Olympics previewAugust 09, 2008 /

Injury update: Ana reacted well to osteopathic treatment on Saturday. The strength has been restored in her right thumb and much of the pain has been alleviated. A decision as to her participation will be made after practice on Sunday. Her first round match against Mariya Koryttseva is scheduled to take place on Monday.
The Olympic Tennis Event begins in Beijing on Sunday. Provided she is fit, Ana will continue her hard court season in the Chinese capital before heading to the U.S. Open, which begins eight days after the Tennis Event finals.

Ana is excited about the prospect of competing in her first Olympics. “The Olympics is something all athletes, not only tennis players, dream of playing,” she said in an interview several months ago. “It’s a great honour to have the opportunity to represent my country there.”

A total of 64 athletes are scheduled to compete, including eight of the world’s top 10 players; the only top 10-ranked players not appearing in Beijing are the Russians Anna Chakvetadze and Maria Sharapova. Chakvetadze chose not to play while Sharapova is injured.

The venue of the Olympic Tennis Event will be the brand new Olympic Green, where several other Olympic sports are also taking place. It is located in the area that includes the National Aquatic Centre, affectionately known as the Water Cube, and the National Stadium, which is often referred to as The Bird’s Nest, where the athletics will be held.

A new challenge for the participating athletes could be the poor air quality in the city: according to a 2004 World Bank survey, Beijing is the 13th most polluted city in the world. However, much has been done to alleviate the smog, including shutting down factories in the months leading up to the Games.

On some days, the city remains under smoggy conditions and athletes complain about the air quality, which could inhibit their performances – some are reportedly wearing masks during their stay in Beijing. On other days the “PM10″ readings – the scientific gauge of air quality – are no worse than most major cities across the globe.

In advance of the last Grand Slam of the year, the same hard court surface, known as DecoTurf II, and the official U.S. Open tournament ball will be used in Beijing.

As well as the medals, the Olympic Tennis Event carries ranking points for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Points will be awarded as follows:

Gold Medal – 353pts
Silver Medal - 245 pts
Bronze Medal - 175pts
4th Place - 135pts
Quarter-finals - 90pts
Third Round - 48pts
Second Round - 28pts
First Round - 1pt

Now and then I say to me “Don’t give up” over and over again. To be honest, I really doubt what I chose and so much want to give up learning translation whenever I meet the barriers. Even though I felt painful sometimes, I do tell myself I must keep moving forward because that’ the way I have chosen after all.
“There are some among us who are ready to give up when they meet a hard example in mathematics and said ‘I can’t do this”.They never will if they feel so. “I can’t” never does anything worthwhile but “I’ll try” accomplishes wonders. We must remember that difficulties are through our life. They are in the pathway of life. If we only try and keep trying we can conquer and overcome every difficulty we meet with. ” At times, I often recite the above inspiring sentences to encourage myself to cheer up and go on fighting for my ideal. Why the ideal is called ideal just results from which is a such hard thing and is not easy to be conquered without enough courage and determination.
Every mountain has a peak. Every valley has its low point. And every life has its ups and downs, peaks and valleys. We may not have chosen the tough time of our life, but we can choose the postive reactions to it while what I choose in postive ways to face anything difficult lovingly and delightedly so as to conquer it in time.
In deed, translation is of such a difficult impediment to me that I have no idea whether I can overcome the block I” meet with and win at the end. In spite of that, I still keep moving forward in that way and don’t give it up. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. This is the general way everybody should get through. In other words, If you accomplish anything, you must meet incalculable difficulties.
Don’t give up and stick it out. My winter must thaw in the springtime.
————————————————————————————–

In the north of China, there lies a 6,700-kilometer-long (4,161-mile-long) ancient wall. Now well-known as the Great Wall of China, it starts at the Jiayuguan Pass of Gansu Province in the west and ends at the Shanhaiguan Pass of Hebei Province in the east. As one of the Eight Wonders in the world, the Great Wall of China has become the symbol of the Chinese nation and its culture.

Lots of beautiful legends and stories about the Great Wall took place following along the construction, and since that time these stories have spread around the country. Those that happened during construction are abundant, such as Meng Jiangnu’s story and the legend of the Jiayuguan Pass. Meng Jiangnu’s story is the most famous and widely spread of all the legends about the Great Wall. The story happened during the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC). It tells of how Meng Jiangnu’s bitter weeping made a section of the Great Wall collapse. Meng Jiangnu’s husband Fan Qiliang was caught by federal officials and sent to build the Great Wall. Meng Jiangnu heard nothing from him after his departure, so she set out to look for him. Unfortunately, by the time she reached the great wall, she discovered that her husband had already died. Hearing the bad news, she cried her heart out. Her howl caused the collapse of a part of the Great Wall. This story indicates that the Great Wall is the production of tens of thousands of Chinese commoners.

Another legend about the Jiayuguan Pass tells of a workman named Yi Kaizhan in the Ming Dynasty (1368BC-1644BC) who was proficient in arithmetic. He calculated that it would need 99,999 bricks to build the Jiayuguan Pass. The supervisor did not believe him and said if they miscalculated by even one brick, then all the workmen would be punished to do hard work for three years. After the completion of the project, one brick was left behind the Xiwong city gate. The supervisor was happy at the sight of the brick and ready to punish them. However Yi Kaizhan said with deliberation that the brick was put there by a supernatural being to fix the wall. A tiny move would cause the collapse of the wall. Therefore the brick was kept there and never moved. It can still be found there today on the tower of the Jiayuguan Pass.

In addition to the above-mentioned stories about the construction of the Great Wall, there are also plenty of stories about current scenic spots. A famous one is the legend of the Beacon Tower. This story happened during the Western Zhou Dynasty (11th century BC-711 BC). King You had a queen named Bao Si, who was very pretty. King You liked her very much, however Bao Si never smiled. An official gave a suggestion that setting the beacon tower on fire would frighten the King’s subjects, and might make the queen smile. King You liked the idea. The subjects were fooled and Bao Si smiled at the sight of the chaos. Later enemies invaded Western Zhou, King You set the beacon tower on fire to ask for help. No subjects came to help because they had been fooled once before. Thus, King Zhou was killed by the enemy and Western Zhou came to an end.

Beautiful stories and legends about the Great Wall help to keep alive Chinese history and culture. In each dynasty after the building of the Great Wall, many more stories were created and spread.

Ever wonder why men find curvaceous women more attractive? Well, that’s because women with a curvy figure are brighter and give birth to brainier kids, according to a new study.
Scientists at the Universities of Pittsburgh and California, Santa Barbara, found that women with large hips and small waists are cleverer than those with either “apple-shaped” or linear bodies.
The study, to be published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, also discovered that curvaceous women give birth to more intelligent children because hip fat contains polyunsaturated fatty acids critical for the development of the fetus’s brain.
The researchers believe that the results shed light on why many men find curvy women more alluring.
For the research, the team used data from a study of 16,000 women and girls, which collected details of their body measurements and their scores in cognitive tests.
They found that those women with a greater difference between the waist and hips scored considerably higher on the tests, as did their children.
The researchers say that the ideal ratio for an intelligent curvy woman lies between 0.6 and 0.7.
They suggest that the fat around fuller hips and thighs contains higher levels of omega3 fatty acids which are essential for the growth of the brain during pregnancy.
Although these theories anticipate confirmation, Paula Hall, a sexual and relationship psychologist with Relate, said: “Having research that proves you can be sexy and intelligent is really positive. It shows that curvy women may be better at things other than raising children and doing cooking and housework.”
The team said that their findings may also explain why children born to teenage mothers do worse in cognitive tests - because their mothers may have had deficient stores of the best fatty acids.
“The cognitive development of their children is reduced, and their own cognitive development is impaired compared with those mothers with a later first birth,” Times Online quoted the researchers, as saying.
The study noted, however, that children born to teenage girls with traditional hourglass figures seemed to be protected from this phenomenon and fared better in tests.
Several scientific studies have shown that men are “hard-wired” to find women with a greater waist-hip differential the most attractive. However, no one has yet been able to elucidate this, although theories include better fertility, better childbearing abilities and longer life expectancy.
Dr Harry Witchel, a senior lecturer in physiology at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and a body language expert on the television programme Big Brother, said: “Until this point the only thing we have accepted is that they [curvy women] are at an advantage in contemporary western society. What these people are saying is that they also have an advantage biologically.”
