The latest news about Ana!-Olympics previewAugust 09, 2008 /

Injury update: Ana reacted well to osteopathic treatment on Saturday. The strength has been restored in her right thumb and much of the pain has been alleviated. A decision as to her participation will be made after practice on Sunday. Her first round match against Mariya Koryttseva is scheduled to take place on Monday.
The Olympic Tennis Event begins in Beijing on Sunday. Provided she is fit, Ana will continue her hard court season in the Chinese capital before heading to the U.S. Open, which begins eight days after the Tennis Event finals.

Ana is excited about the prospect of competing in her first Olympics. “The Olympics is something all athletes, not only tennis players, dream of playing,” she said in an interview several months ago. “It’s a great honour to have the opportunity to represent my country there.”

A total of 64 athletes are scheduled to compete, including eight of the world’s top 10 players; the only top 10-ranked players not appearing in Beijing are the Russians Anna Chakvetadze and Maria Sharapova. Chakvetadze chose not to play while Sharapova is injured.

The venue of the Olympic Tennis Event will be the brand new Olympic Green, where several other Olympic sports are also taking place. It is located in the area that includes the National Aquatic Centre, affectionately known as the Water Cube, and the National Stadium, which is often referred to as The Bird’s Nest, where the athletics will be held.

A new challenge for the participating athletes could be the poor air quality in the city: according to a 2004 World Bank survey, Beijing is the 13th most polluted city in the world. However, much has been done to alleviate the smog, including shutting down factories in the months leading up to the Games.

On some days, the city remains under smoggy conditions and athletes complain about the air quality, which could inhibit their performances – some are reportedly wearing masks during their stay in Beijing. On other days the “PM10″ readings – the scientific gauge of air quality – are no worse than most major cities across the globe.

In advance of the last Grand Slam of the year, the same hard court surface, known as DecoTurf II, and the official U.S. Open tournament ball will be used in Beijing.

As well as the medals, the Olympic Tennis Event carries ranking points for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Points will be awarded as follows:

Gold Medal – 353pts
Silver Medal - 245 pts
Bronze Medal - 175pts
4th Place - 135pts
Quarter-finals - 90pts
Third Round - 48pts
Second Round - 28pts
First Round - 1pt
